GIS plays an integral role in project planning for renewable energy resources like solar and wind. Many factors must be considered during the planning and site selection phase of any solar / wind project. Using GIS we can more easily determine site selection through the analysis of factors like distance to power sources and large populations, wind and solar potential, land / vegetation cover, and even social and environmental impacts like environmentally sensitive areas and critical habitats for sensitive wildlife populations.
